71' 4"

At 71 feet 4 inches. ¼ inch on the target = 1 minute of angle.
Taken from the 1960 edition of "The Lee Enfield Rifle" by Major EGB Reynolds.

Shame that Bisley's zero range is 71' 7" according to the range regulations! Always wondered why it was such a peculiar distance, now I know.

edit - and this was post number 303! :shakeshout:

The good Major is, fortunately, incorrect.

0.25" subtends 1 minute at 71.61972... feet, which I make 71' 7" to the nearest inch.

Curiously, I have tried the sum with every poular approximation to Pi, and with that abomination the military mil, and none of these starting points lead to the answer the Major quotes. I conclude his arithmetic simply wasn't that good.

Of course, I have a calculator and he didn't.

When I first started shooting I asked that question and my coach explained the mathematics to me then. He used a blackboard and chalk (no-not a slate!) It seemed to take a while and, when I had just gotten my head around it he said 'Treat it like pi, don't worry about figuring it out, know that it works and get on with it'

71'7''....

Close enough to 22 metres for me...

Is it to be taken from the muzzle, the rearsight or the buttplate? LOL
