7.62 banned at Kingsbury ranges

Well oomans, here's what happened. Allegedly, in case any legal weasels get too excited.

A group of cabbage patch kids* were apparently just looking at a GMPG when, as they do, "it went orf". A short time later an irate member of the local community ** complained of a 7.62 mm hole in their car and a bullet inside it. No comment was made as to where the rest of the burst went. As a result, any calibre larger than a flea bite*** is currently banned at Kingsbury until some grown ups have had a talk about it.

*** The printed Range Standing Orders state " .303 mm or greater ", along with other calibres such as "51mm NATO" and ".7 mm". 'Twould appear the prohibition has been ordained by an eejit.

Surely ".7mm" IS already covered by your earlier mention of ".303 mm or greater"

I don't see the problem myself as I don't have a 2" MORTAR ("51mm NATO", surely ?)

IF it WAS the cabbage patch kids that did do do dat bad thing - or were being next to the GPMG when it got itself all tired confused & emotional & had a little cry of half a belt of FMJ/tracer until it felt better - then surely the said cabage patch kiddies can be restricted to barracks and made to sit in their rooms poishing their buttons, and not allowed anything other than soft air-toys/pointy sticks until such as time as one of them sez sowwy and promises not to do it again....??

An Army SNAFU is just that - and ARMY one = so why punish the civilan users who have a much better safety record on MoD ranges than the MoD/Army have ? :cool2:

So Army ND exits the limited danger area. Can't see a reason for a blanket prohibition of .30" calibre weapons there myself. "Error of drill - firer negligent".

Do remember that but for the work of the NRA and a good friend of the NRA in the military organisations that deal with this stuff, it would have been 3800J. Do the sums and see what that leaves you with (I did - I was working on HIH do we continue with 3800J when some clever negotiators got the number up to allow what we have).

Having just looked at Kingsbury on Google Earth - Wood End is 3400 yards from the 600 FP - can anyone explain the Danger Area arrangements for Kingsbury? The area behind the stop butt looks like worked farmland - one might find tractors with drivers and suchlike anytime, so I must be missing something about the range arrangements. Nonetheless, Wood End is beyond the usual dimensions of a Restricted Danger Area that typically applies to a Gallery Range, so if the intelligence from the tunnelers is correct, something odd has happened.

Anyone got info?

Just to keep the record straight, I found myself reviewing this over the weekend. It was the Army, there was no stray round involved, it arose from consideration of whether a certain firearm / ammo / range combination was permitted. When it became apparent that it wasn't, some deeper questions got asked and the limits were reconsidered.

No more news on Kingsbury at this point I'm afraid.
