using previously fired lead for casting

#1 Post by Primer »

Just wondering where you guys source your lead from for casting, also what price you pay per kilo.

Also I was at our range on Thursday and they were cleaning out the backstops and I asked if I could buy some of the lead off them to cast into shotgun slugs but the guy there thought there was some scientific reason that you can't re use previously shot lead, he said he will check with his boss, so is there a reason you can't re use previously shot lead?

Thanks in advance

No, there shouldn't be any reason at all, scientifically speaking...

No reason at all why you can not use it.

I don't know about scientifically, but financially it's a no brainer.

Recovered slug is quite hard, I 'soften' mine by adding pure lead which I scrounge wherever I can.

No you can't use it.

To avoid all scientific risk you can have it sent it to me for proper disposal.

What price should I look at paying per kilo, as they normally wait till they have half a ton and take it to the scrappers, I see online some scrappers are paying 75p a kilo ?

Dromia, you're right, I should have said that! I'll help if you get too much!

We are used to the effects of lead radiation down here, the Navy used to give us medicine to counteract the effects.

It was called Renal Unbalance Medicative and had to be taken orally every day.

+1 on that
I use 1/2 range lead and 1/2 sheet lead from the scrappy (for pistol calibres that is)
For rifle use I use 33% range 33% sheet and 33% linotype (+1% of whatever gets in the pot) I melt around 80kg per batch in a Dutch oven

Straight out of the back stop - around 50p per kilo.
I'll take all and any at that price!
