Bench rest , bench

#1 Post by Dave 101 »

Afternoon all ,

Has any one attempted to make themselves a portable bench to take to the range ? I know there are one or two on the market that can folded flat .
I have done a couple with an all timber construction but they end up being a bit cumbersome and need bolting together before use to make them as rigid as possible . I have also made legs out of welded angle iron but found it to be a bit springy and was the least favorite idea and soon given the chop .
I have recently seen folding table legs for use in caravans , but due to the price didnt pursue this as a whim of fancy .
My shooting buddy has just started using a work mate which does seem OK , I was thinking of one of these with a top attached http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-09951-60 ... 591&sr=1-1
Any one tried it as Iam not sure how stable it would be .
Basic use is indoor .22 BR .
If you have a better idea let me know .

I use my workmate. I have a length of blockboard approx 4 feet long by 12 inches which has a length of 2 x 2 screwed centrally along one face which clamps into the workmate, a shaped cutout at one end for me to get into and, refinement of refinements, a piece of 2 x 1 across the front edge to stop my bipod or machine rest up against. I use a fishing stool.

It's gone dark here otherwise I'd provide a photo. It does me for load testing "down on the farm" where establishing a stable position on four legs can sometimes be a bit trial and error but on a concrete surface it's absolutely fine. If this was America and we had prarie dawg cities, it'd do duty there too. The 2 x 2 which clamps my "bench" into the workmate gives me flexibility to have it horizontal or tilted fore / aft.
