7.62X54 Cast boolit loads wanted.

#1 Post by Alpha1 »

I have a Mosin nagant sitting in my Cabinet have not shot it in a age. I would like to shoot it using cast boolits. Its fitted with a Darrel mount and short eye relief pistol scope so the sight thing is not a problem I can just re zero the scope for cast.
Any recipes would be good.
Powders I have to hand are 2400. Unique. Vit N310. Vit N320.Vit N140 and a couple of other Vitavouri powders that are probaly not suitable for cast.

You need Accurate 5744 by preference.
I could sell you some boolits - same as .303

Powder of choice would be Vihtavuori N120 followed by N110, both of which have performed better than 5744 or whatever it is called now in my guns, although with the powders you have 2400 would be the one I'd use.

I am assuming that you are not wanting full stoke loads Dave so around 1600 fps would be OK? Get you out to 300 yrds.

So with the 2400 Harris's load of 16 gns would be a starter, a reread of his article in the Library wouldn't go amiss either for loads.

For VV N120 I use a start load of 19 gns and for VV N110 a start load of 16 gns both of which gives me velocities of around 1300 fps and carefully work up from there. That is with a 200 gns boolit, always best to use a heavier cast boolit than the normal condom weight for the calibre.
