Handgunner...defo great mag...used to get that one to.

I was having a magazine clear out at the weekend and came across a few copies of this, by coincidence one had a review of the Taurus mod .66 which was the last handgun i owned, albeit in LBR form!

I rated the UK Handgunner above all. The standard of writing was far ahead of the competition.
Just look at what passes for gun-related journalism now eg: "The Journal"....good grief.

If anyone's interested, I'm putting my entire collection of the UK Handgunner on Ebay.

Target Gun was my first choice and then Guns Review. Found the others a bit too gung ho for my tastes.

I have a pile of them in my shed they often get a glance through.
Looking at the ads it goes to show that a huge percentage of shooters were using pistols, and the size of the industry destroyed by the government. many ads from businesses long gone. :cool2:

Guns Review definitely not the best format but a knowledgeable journal with excellent editorial by Colin Greenwood. I read this from the time I started shooting until the time that the National Pistol Association decided at its A.G.M. in one of the Pistol 82/83 or 84 meetings to change to Target Gun as the official publication for the association.
Handgunner which was edited by Jan Stephenson (quite an interesting character who I met a few times) was written quite cleverly but occasionally in too much of a scholarly manner by wordsmiths eager to impress with their academic backgrounds. Definitely the sexiest of the magazines of the era though not always as accurate in detail as Guns Review.
Target Gun – I read this from the day it came out just as I did from day one of Sporting Gun. The pistol ban killed it off Target Gun, renaming the magazine was just plain silly and didn’t work.
In my opinion all three magazines had one thing in common, they were supported by the large number of pistol shooters who were eager to have something to read each month about their sport. What do we have now – nothing. Absolutely nothing worth reading. I used to buy probably two magazines a week when you included the odd Guns & Ammo or Combat Pistols but now only occasionally buy a magazine because a single article takes my interest, invariably I am disappointed and wish that I hadn’t wasted my money.

I don't buy any gun comics at all now, i just can't find enthusiasm for them, I'm also the same with the motorbike comics.

I'm on forums where members have said in parts of the U.S. you can't buy a gun publication now, there just not on the rack anymore. Yesterday in a supermarket in Phoenix I noticed there are about a dozen different gun periodicals for sale.

I don't even bother looking anymore - and have not done so for several years (actually come to think of it, it's been many years now since buying any gun mag).

Back in the 'good old days', I used to think Colin Greenwood was overstating his case - sadly, much of what he predicted has come to pass.
