Rifle is brand new out of the box so chambered at factory. Local gunsmith reckons that it's right on the spec limit and agrees that's a good thing, as it chambers cases sized with the modified Lee die I can just keep using that. I'll see if anyone has an RCBS small base set or Hornady dies which are supposed to be small based as standard I beleive.

As I may be going back to the same dealer for a nice s/h Steyr Scout they have in .223 I was thinking of taking it back at the same time but as it chambers factory ammo they may not accept there's a problem.

Have you measured the case headspace of a case that has been fired in the rifle?
Have you measured the case headspace of a case you have resized?

These measurements ought to identify whether the problem lies with the chamber or with your die setup.

Afternoon peeps,

This may have nothing too do with the price of fish but.... I too have a Howa 1500 axiom in 308 and my niggle is not with reloads or using once fired Ruag from Peter Lawman, but its trying to close the bolt on new PPU .
The bolt will close and lock but it feels fairly stiff.
Once I have some cases fire formed and neck sized they load as smooth as anything. ( dies are Lee and press Wamadet)
