Thanks for that article John as i often wondered why WD40 was a no-no for firearms! It will stay in my BP box thou, as its great for loosening up the fouling when I get my cleaning rod and patch stuck down the barrel.

Ok for cleaning and 'emergency' lube but it dries, collects debris and does more harm than good.

As with all barrel cleaning and preservative products, you should remove them before firing.

The laws of physics dictate that you can't compress a liquid so too much (or even a little much) of anything in your barrel is liable to destroy it.

I knew a chap use to come in to the range office to buy ammunition for his number four.

He insisted, against my advice, on buying 155 ammo. In fact he was christened 155 by another friend of his.

He also admitted oiling his rounds (because that's what I do with my air rifle to make it shoot better)

So, Mr 155 was firing a proof round and more every time he pulled the trigger.

We weaned him off the oil but he still blew the action on his gun.

Bless him, he is gone now (illness not breach explosion) he was a lovely bloke apart from being a silly sod sometimes.

John,

Great article, worth saving for future reference. Reminds me that when cleaning and maintaining our equipment many of us are going blind with little real knowledge of what is actually best, relying mostly on what feels right, word of mouth and what we can glean from the side of cans etc. I am sure that a day long course in maintenance and cleaning would be a worth while investment for many shooters.

There is a guy offering to coat rifle parts in something slippery in the UK, I was a little concerned when he said for me to just post my receiver and bolt to him.

My advice would be to keep your bolt and receiver where they belong, with you.

Nothing which anyone can spray on your bits will last.

(Think of the magic spray on 'we will fix your old bath' enamel - bunk) (my opinion in case someone wants a fight tongueout )

Clean, inspect, shoot, clean, oil, stow.

Even engine oil will do.

As long as the chamber and barrel are 'dry', When you shoot, all is well.

Something else I would recommemnd when storing an 'oiled'' gun; muzzle down. The oil is better puddling in the bottom of the cabinet than soaking into your nice woodwork.

Correction to my earlier post when I said that mollied bullets are not allowed in NRA competitions, they are in 'F' open.
