Split brass from .22lr - Ok or ....?

#1 Post by FarmerSim »

Hi All, bought a cheap .22lr, a Lakefield 64B SA. It seems Ok, but I've had a couple of badly split cases ejected, and I wondered what folk thought?

Photo shows 4 cases, "1" is a minor (?) split at the front, "2" is an unsplit "normal" case, and 3 & 4 are rather badly split at the rear. Its these that concern me.

Should I be concerned?

For context, the two cases shown are from one box ( of 50 ). The splits are to the left of the firing pin, which is at 12 o'clock on the Lakefield.

TIA

Get the chamber checked out

MAY be an ammo issue, may be an oversized chamber

Thanks for the reply Saddler. I'm thinking that as the gun was only cheap, but off an RFD, and I've not had it a week (!), then I'll be ringing the guy.....

I would appreciate some other opinions though, please..

TIA

I'd try it with another few brands of ammo too....

MOST gun problems are down to poor ammo or damaged magazines

When cases are splitting like this it may be the ammo at fault - as there aint much you can do to a .22 to wear it out

I agree, it is pretty difficult to wear a .22LR out so if it was mine I would give the chamber and bore a good clean, visually inspect and then try some CCI's or similar through it.

If it was someone else's.....

Thank you all for the replies. I did clean the gun thoroughly before firing it, as it was full of crud. I've insufficient experience of guns to know whether the thing is any good or not...

I will try some other Ammo as soon as I can get some - which will hopefully be tomorrow - its the problem with living out in the sticks!!

I'll post how I get on..

Thanks again.

I'm beginning to regret buying this thing! Damn rabbits are digging under the house and buildings though - so something needs to be done!!

I've shot quite a bit of winchester 'super x' rimfire ammunition, and never had results on brass even approaching what you have there.

Get the rifle back to the dealer and ask what the hell's going on. Either that or if you're not in a hurry involve the proof house!!

You could even give a couple of rounds of ammo to a friend to shoot in a different rifle to discount the ammo as a possibility.

Find your shooting glasses and wear them O:-)

Surely a case shouldn't crack at the base; it should be properly supported by the bolt face and breech walls? This should be true whatever the ammunition. I'm no expert but personally I would not shoot it again and return it for a refund.

Then get in touch and I'll come and deal with your bunnies :0037:

The .22LR only has a few grains of powder in it. Do they blow up rifles ever?
