Anyone using IMI Trail Boss?

#1 Post by hakeswill »

I am starting reloading and I am thinking of using Trail boss powder for loading .45 Colt (SAA pistol) and was wondering if anyone has any experience with it?

Looks good for filling up the .45 colt case and preventing overcharging and quite a lot of the cowboy shooters in the US seem to be recommending it so I thought it might be a good powder to try first?

I know a bloke that uses TB in 45 LC. Uses it for Gallery Rifle. Seems to work well for him.
It's not the pace of life that concerns me, it's the sudden stop at the end!

Not seen the tinstar will look it up.

The velocities on the TB look very low compared to other powders, how would this affect accuracy?

Also it says it is designed for shooting lead bullets with cowboy action loads does this mean you shouldn't use it with copper plated bullets? My lee book with load data seems to have very little data with regards to copper plated/jacket rounds and only lists two powders to use with them and not sure why.

Hi,

I use it in a .45LC Marlin cowboy competition.

Velocity is low, but accuracy is very impressive at least in 25yd gallery range with virtually no recoil allowing for very fast shots to be taken. Be aware though, the tub is only 9oz, not 1lb.

Yea I did notice it comes in 9oz but if I have done my sums correct then it only works out at about £1 extra per 100 shots compared to titegroup.

How do you find it compared to other powders you have used? Does it burn quite clean? Are you using cast lead bullets?

I like it.

I'd say it burns just as well as anything else I've ever used.

You should only use it with lead bullets, it doesn't really have enough kapow for jacketed - ask me how I know

Meters pretty well, certainly notice the powder in the case, couldn't really double charge and burns cleanly.

I was using 250g lead RNFP, made by ACE bullets.
