Possessing shotgun cartridges

Horrible business but this line stopped me:
The men being held had been arrested on suspicion of possessing shotgun cartridges before the body was found.
As far as I know anyone can possess shotgun cartridges, there's no need to have an SGC and no prohibition on criminals from possessing it. You only need an SGC to purchase it.

Am I wrong? I suppose it could have been slugs but that doesn't seem very likely.

No, you're not wrong. You don't need an SGC to purchase or possess shotgun ammunition. :cool2:

Under suspicion of possesing? Ugh? Wat does that mean? The had them or not? ...............I suppose if they were pond life the arrest for possesion could be related to no good reason and harmful intent .......

(I have not read the original story)

I guess that if you are prohibited from owning firearms /ammunition by way of previous convictions, then that would include shotgun ammunition.

"On Suspicion" is a common phrase, it might be that the Officers involved are not qualified to state that the items are shotgun ammunition and will need to get a statement from a suitably qualified person before they can charge.
Often used with drugs as Officers can not say what a "white powder" is until it is sent to a lab, although it is accepted that Officers out of their probation can recognise cannabis.

Possession of Section 2 shotgun cartridges does not require an SGC, possession of Section 1 cartridges requires an FAC. As Dangermouse said the officers on scene might not be able to differentiate between the two.

Also although possessing S2 ammo does not require an SGC, it is highly likely that an officer finding someone in possession, rightly or wrongly, will ask "Where did you get these/why have you got these" etc, if you fail to give a plausible answer or refuse to, i'd expect you'd get nicked until the matter was resolved.

I would be delighted to run courses for these people totally FOC. Amazing that one now needs a bit of paper to recognise the obvious...what happened in the old days before "idiotic bits of paper saying you know the bleeeding obvious" were invented? As I said, FOC as long as I get to play on the interactive video trainer or their local range.

I have 2 boxes of 25 Dummy 12 gauge cartridges for practising loading drills safely. Apart from the word "Dummy" along the side they look exactly the same as a live cartridge - you can see the shot in them etc.
It took 6 weeks for them to clear customs sa they insisted on seeing a copy of my FAC. Yes my FAC, not SC, which is handy as I dint have a SC. Several times I sat down to write a letter telling them that I did not need a certificate, but in the end it was easier to send them my FAC.

That aside, it is not the Police who have decided that they can not recognise certain items, it has come abouts a result of cross examining, where by the officers have quickly shown their lack of knowledge on a subject, easily done if you put a person who is an expert on a given subject against one who has a working knowledge.

With my limited knowledge of shotgun ammunition, I could easily run rings around a average PC who claimed to know what a shotgun cartridge was,
Off the top of my head I might include,

Lipstick
Knife
Torch
Lighter
Paperweight
As items that are not even ammunition but look like Shotgun cartridges,

Then we have all the Sec 1 and Sec 5 stuff that the average UK Joe will never come across, Dragons breath etc, that could be thrown in,

We could soon have the jury thinking the PC does not even know what a Shotgun is.....
