Gun-safe key scare

I use one of these to keep my main set of keys, the others are in an ammo safe, this way I know where the keys are, but there is no chance that anyone else can access them without resorting to force (assuming they can find them) to my mind this means that I cannot leave them lying around, and I can't be robbed of them while asleep or by being mugged.

I keep my main set on me and my spare set in one of those key safes, which is hidden in the house and in a difficult to 'attack' location. I think they would have a better chance of getting into the cabinet that the key safe :G

I think some people take things a bit far, i had a heated debate with someone on another forum about this and he was ademant that your keys must be kept on your person at all times, no excuses, they shouldn't be left in a jacket in the living room if you're in a bedroom etc, when i asked him what he did when he took a bath/shower he didn't reply :shock: :lol:

Having relatively recently been granted my FAC, the FEO more or less stipulated that I must store the keys in an electronic key pad type safe. £30 off ebay was fine with me - the spares are hidden stored in a place very out of the way. No one else knows the code to the safe, or the location of the spares, which, granted will be a pain for Mrs Sim if anything happens to me, but I'm not going!! :mrgreen:

Having talked to quite a few other SGC/FAC holders within the same force area, it seems to be the way the force here want the job done.

It is also my understanding of the law that you must take "reasonable" precautions, and so if the FEO says do "X", then this works for me. As has been said above, if the sticky fingered types want anything you have, nothing bar extreme measures, is going to stop them.

Of course, if you want to know your force's opinion on the matter, ask them ! I seem to ring mine on an irregular basis - they recognise my name now, and, without exception are very keen to help. On the rare occasions they don't know the answer, they say they will ring me back with the answer, which they do, usually with half an hour or so. Top service in my book. :goodjob:

My spare set requires three things to access them - including another specific person (who does not know) plus tools and on top of that, knowledge about where the set are.

People, including the FEO, have been within millimetres but would never know how close they were.

My FEO is happy with where the standard set are and I think it is down to how the FEO perceives YOU as to what he/she might suggest.


On this, I am about to take my brother-in-laws house apart trying to find his keys. We have tried to find them already but unsuccessfully. Standard methods to force open the cabinet will not work - it is built into a 3 feet thick stone wall and a lock smith is quoting £250 + VAT ! An angle grinder might be the final solution!

A friend of mine wanted to show me a rigby rifle of his about ten years ago. He took me to the cupboard in his city centre flat, and reached for the cup hook screwed into the door surround - that was where he kept his cabinet keys, just a few feet away from the cabinet. God I laughed. :lol:

I don't have any concerns about my keys though, only problem would be if I died, my family would have difficulty getting the set I use.
