Sound moderator- muzzle forward or over barrel

#1 Post by nickredhill »

I need to buy two moderators, one for 223 and one for 308. I've heard that muzzle forward can help with barrel heat at the range because it wouldn't be over the barrel and retaining the heat.
Any suggestions? Does anyone even sell muzzle forward for full-bore?

Makes no difference at all. They all get bloody hot depending on how fast you shoot. I have both types. ASE are 'muzzle forward'... and so are the new Wildcats

Neither .223 or .308 are particularly hot cartridges (in 'sensible' length barrels) so unless you're planning on putting down a serious amount of ammo in a short period you probably wouldn't notice the difference in terms of heat dissipation. End thread moderators do cool faster but for anything most people are doing in this country you probably wouldn't see much difference in cooling times.

Over-barrel/'reflex' moderators reduce the OAL of the gun and keeps the weight of the mod as far back as is possible. End thread moderators can have more of an effect on PoI shift due to them putting more 'force' on the barrel. Reflex mods do 'cook' the outside of the barrel though so depending on the finish you may get some discolouration if thats important to you.
