Barrett BORS

#1 Post by ovenpaa »

They say:
The Barrett Optical Ranging System (BORS) is an exciting new innovation in long range shooting. The integrated electronic ballistic computer couples directly to the Schmidt Bender 5-25x56 PM II riflescopes acting as the upper rear scope ring.
• Measures air temperature, barometric pressure, and bore line angle
• Calculates a ballistic solution for a specific user-selected cartridge
• Eliminates the need for "counting clicks", calculating mil dots as target ranges change, or using a hand held computer
• Allows the shooter to focus on environmental conditions, assess the tactical situation, and quickly engage multiple targets at varying ranges
• Takes the mystery out of bullet drop
I say:

Ouch. That is expensive at USD2000+ Barrett harp on about tactical advantage and use words like operator and theatre however I am yet to find any evidence of it being used in the field. I certainly have no plans to buy one but I am interested in other peoples views.

Anyone?

US marine (i think) snipers definitely use it on the Barrett Light 50. I watched a 'documentary' on the history/products of Barrett last week and i think the guy who has the longest recorded kill (US) used it then.

If i was going to spend all that money on it i'd what it to adjust my knobs (oo matron) automatically or at least show the hold over on the scopes reticle (like the Burris Eliminator)

Ronnie Barratt hasn't turned out as honourable as some would think......

Purely from gossip, from a "source in the know" allegedly and that the company concerned is "defunct", it goes like;

RPA, which allegedly has more .50 cal rifles in the "sniper" role than any other manufacturer, secured a healthy contract with some Mid-Eastern country to supply even more .50's. The contract called for a "package" and allegedly RPA signed a deal with, again allegedly, Leupold. Barratt got to hear of this and was not happy as, allegedly, he was a second best to RPA and he himself had a "contract" with Leupold. Supposedly, Barratt contacted Leupold and apart from threatening to cease using their scopes, he went on a patriotic angle. US companes, blah, blah, blah, foreigners, blah, blah, blah. Leupold withdrew from their contract with RPA, allegedly....

This left RPA in a quandry who at the final hour, secured a shipment of S&B, allegedly. They delivered their packages to the end user, but were in some business contract stook becase of the change of spec....... allegedly. All because of Barratt's "dolly out of pram"...... allegedly.....

The above was gossip. I do not know if any of it is fact or even loosely based in fact, but another bloke who represents Leupold in the UK, would neither confirm, nor deny........ allegedly!

What's more surprising than underhand business, is that RPA have more .50 cal sniper rifles in service than any other producer! Allegedly....
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

ovenpaa, if its an ouch at $2000 then it will be a severe yelp of agony if it ever reached these shores. Given the US fixation with anything that can be used against them and multiple use produts this will probbaly never see the UK...

Oh and US companies love the US, all patriotic etc irrespective of which is best - allegedly of course. Protectionism, never.
Political Correctness is the language of lies, written by the corrupt , spoken by the inept!

Hang on, is that not a Leupold scope in the pic?

I honestly thought it was Mr Accuracy International?
They are forever ceasing supply to civilian customers due to fulfilment of army contracts or other contracts. Fair to say that does not mean they are selling .50cals to the army/other.

Yes, the text and image came from different locations.

It basically looks like an integrated version of the Intervention package from Cheytac (handheld ballistic computer, handheld atmospheric sensor unit, and tripod mounted/handheld laser range finder binoculars).

That's in use with Turkish and Polish special forces.
