Getting back into Reloading - Basic questions!

#1 Post by Gh0st »

So been a few years since i reloaded .44 and i was a lot younger and inexperienced, so i have a few basic questions which may seem stupid to some but i'd like to see what others find the best solutions.

Tumbling - I have a tumbler which still works. I have some very dirty .44 case which need cleaning. What media does everyone recommend? do you add any cleaners?

I'm using a Dillon XL650 to load it has carbide pistol dies but do the case still need any lube on them?

No doubt more questions to follow in the next few weeks.

I'm sure the 20+ year old .44 cases will be fine and you'll soon get back in the swing. I'm guessing you have an old vibro tumbler of some sort using dry media. You can still buy branded media from one of the online sellers, here's one from Spud, if you look down the dropdown menu there's treated nut shell, corncob, reactivators etc. https://www.1967spud.com/shop/lyman/media/

If you have a pet shop locally you might find crushed nut shells as used for reptile bedding - much cheaper than any "shooting" product.

Vibro tumbling will take ages to clean very dirty cases - you might try a quick soak in dilute vinegar, coca-cola lemon juice, citric acid etc. then a good rinse will get the grime off.

Using the carbide sizing dies for straight walled pistol cases you won't need any lube. It'll be like riding a bike once you get started.

They are pretty much 18 years old... but howd you know that!

Yup old Lyman turbo tumbler. They could definitely need a pre wash before tumbling.
