RCBS Trim pro spring loaded case holder

I have the standard trim pro and 3 way trimmer heads so don't really want to by something new but I have never been happy with the tension of the clamping mechanism, the cases have to be held by hand otherwise they spin.

I wondered if anyone has one and can tell me if this system holds the cases tight please?

Alas, I've just ordered one of the RCBS universal hand priming tools which features the same mechanism for holding the cases. It's due to arrive somewhere close to end of this month, so unless anyone else chips in I will let you know how secure it would be for trimming.

I have the Universal hand primer (and very good it is too!) but it's certainly not designed to hold the cases with anything more than just enough pressure to prime with, they are free to rotate and move quite freely.

I too have the universal primer & as phaedra says, it's very good indeed, though a tad more susceptible to 'operator error' than my standard RCBS hand primer.
Looking at the image, it appears that some sort of camming action must lock the cases in place between the jaws & the knurled stud.
If that's the case, it should be a pretty tight lock-up.

I use the standard Trim Pro all the time. You can adjust the tension by screwing in the two lugs that hold the shell holder. If at any time its been taken apart have you replaced the spring washers correctly? Might be worth asking RCBS for replacements.

I will be interested to hear how the universal shell holder works. regards Colin

Looking at the photo there's a major difference to the Universal Priming Tool, on the photo you can see a textured area where the base of the case sits (looks like chequering on a stock) so I'd think that when the case is pushed up against it by the trimmer it will prevent the case rotating when it's trimmed.

I took the mechanism apart and there's only a fairly flimsy compression spring in it. I bought it Second hand ages ago so no idea what should be in there. If anyone can take one apart and give me a clue I'd appreciate it.

Alan, From memory there were more than one compression springs - that is most likely the problem since mine is 30 plus years old and still works fine and holds cases from 22 250 up to .338LM without movement. Talk to RCBS and they will send them for free.

I think I still prefer having separate shell holders - that looks a bit fiddly and if it has sufficient tension could be a tad hard getting cases in. Talk to RCBS.
