Is this added to 'dry' corn cob type media?? I thought this sort of thing what the flash-Harrys that use the stainless steel pins do? As per the OP I would've thought adding any liquid would result in a sticky mess/a claggy ball rolling around inside the tumbler?

Not if you do it as per my post, neat car polish will ball in the media which is why you cut it with white spirit. The media is still dry to all appearances after adding.

To be on the safe side it is best to stay away from Brasso, it contains ammonia which weakens and degrades brass

Yes any cheapo car polish Just though you may have found one better.

SS pins tumbler, 6L of water, 1-200 x 308 cases (or whatever DodgyRog brings me to clean!), add a splash of lemon flavoured w/up liquid and a couple of teaspoons of citric acid (softens the water) and off we go.

Alternatively the usual vibratory cleaner using very fine media, 03-06mm 25/52 mesh walnut shell sand blasting grit, cheap off eBay.

All those old brass ornaments you used to see that have lost their definition and sharpness is usually due to the enthusiastic application of Brasso.

so it's the ammonia wearing away brass, rather than the soft metal being worn away by the abrasive polishing action?

The polishing will no doubt accelerate it, however as most polishing would be done with a soft cloth that in itself wouldn't have been that abrasive. Who knows what was used in the days before Brasso, brick dust?

st/steel pins tumbler with a dash of washing up liquid and full of water , work perfect !

Lyman corncob media and Midway vibrator. To keep the media Clean I cut small strips of vileda cleaning cloth and add them to the mix. Had the same bottle of media 20 plus years,-- used about half.
