Re: Help choosing a 7.62/.308
if you want to shoot 30cal and don't mind a variation then my vote would be for the Military target rifle....K31 other than that you are stuck with those that come in 7.62/.308 and there aren't any that come to mind bearing in mind that .308 is a 1952 calibre and you wouldn't want to get Adams blood pressure up would you ?

Re: Help choosing a 7.62/.308
You will have to explain the restrictions on my FAC 7.62 x51 but not 7.62 x 54

Re: Help choosing a 7.62/.308
Its quite simple 7.62/.308 is a different caliber to 7.62x54 Russian. 7.62x54 is a rimmed military cartridge 7.62/.308 is not. So if you want a Mosin Nagant in 7.62x54 you need a variation.
There are lots of 7.62 cartridges 7.62x39 is another for example you need to be specific so your ticket has the right calibers on it for the firearms you wish to acquire. Before applying for a fire arm certificate its all ways a good idea to talk to experienced shooters to help you get it right first time with out going back for variations and the chew on it entails.
So you are a bit restricted in your choice I'm afraid.

Actually 7.62 x 51, 7.62 x 54. 7.62 x 39 and 308 are all the same calibre in that they are all the same bore diameter. FAC's usually specify a chambering or cartridge such as 308/7.62 which allows you to purchase/hold a firearm of 308 Winchester or it's military equivalent 7.62 x 51 often called 7.62 NATO.Alpha1 wrote:Its quite simple 7.62/.308 is a different caliber to 7.62x54 Russian. 7.62x54 is a rimmed military cartridge 7.62/.308 is not. Re: Help choosing a 7.62/.308
They are not the same bore diameter the 7.62/.308 are .308 bore and there for uses .308 bullets. The 7.62x54 is a .311 bore and uses the same diameter bullet as used in the .303. The 7.62x39 comes in either .308 or like the one I own are .311. I use a 125grain .311 jacketed bullet in mine but it works better with a cast bullet.(But that's another subject all together) Lets not confuse the guy with duff info he has enough problems as it is. As I said previously its all ways worth talking to some one with experience before applying for your certificate if you know what you want before you apply it makes it a much smoother experience and you dont have the chew on of applying for variations.
Re: Help choosing a 7.62/.308
They are the same nominal calibre though.
Fear not though if you want to change your FAC. You can do a free of charge one for one variation. That is, surrender your 308/7.62 slot in exchange for your new chosen cartridge/chambering. The only fly in the ointment being possibly the turnaround time of your local Firearm Licencing Department.

No he can not he does not have a 7.5 slot. Stop confusing the guy. He will be having a nervous breakdown shortly.bradaz11 wrote:so he can get a k31 on his 7.62/308 then, as 7.5 swiss is a 308
