I was given some cast bullets last night (303,308) they have a taper for gas checks.
What I want to know is can they be loaded without gas checks? And what is the maximum speed that they can be rated to? Both are170 grains.
Thanks
Sam

Re: Cast bullets
Depends on velocity and the rifle.
Most rifles will shoot gas checked bullets without gas checks but some will not just depends, every gun is different.
You will just need to try them to see if they work in yours.
A taper for a gas check? The gas check shank on gas check bullets isn't noticeably tapered

Re: Cast bullets
It is described as the bullet is shanked to take 0.30 gas check if that makes sense.

Re: Cast bullets
Provided the bullet is a good fit for the bore you should be ok with no gc up to moderate speeds..say 1400fps....why not just get the die and some ally gc...you will also have to lube the bullets...a decent fit bullet with gc and lube should be good to 2000fps.
