I just checked my manuals I have a lot. Yes the new lee manual states that the starting weight is 41grains the rest of my manuals quote 44grains as a starting load. I guess its time to have a clear out and bin them.

Always best to go by the powder manufacturers current data, they all have the data on their web sites, the Hodgdon and VihtaVuori sites are both good.

I just checked my Hornady re loading manual I don't know why I did not do that in the first place.(Kindle version)
H4350 start 37.5grains max 43.7grains. So that's different again from Hodgons data.

120 grain A max cartridge overall length = 2.905. I can not achieve 2.905 any way. I think I will just bin the lot and go back to vitavouri as and when I find a supply.

Always go by the powder manufacturers data.

40gr of H4350 will be fine as a starting point, what was the actual COAL you ended up getting to load?

Just looked at the Hornady site and can't see any reloading data for the 6.5x55, there's very little on there as they only publish stuff for new products. Nosler list the 120's starting at 41.5 with H4350 or 42.5 of Viht N160 as their most accurate load, again these are based on longer COALs than you have so knocking a grain off as a starting load would be advisable.

My actual cartridge overall length to function correctly with out anything jamming up is 2.846" so some what shorter than the manufactures recommended 3.000"

I checked one of the previous owners dummy rounds its a Lapua case with a 120grain bullet the case is the same length as mine 2.155" his cartridge overall length is 2.858 so similar to my dimensions.

Lots of room on my shelves for stuff. I have chucked all my old reloading manuals.

So still well within SAAMI spec :)

As I said earlier with A-Max they tend to load further into the case than say Lapua Scenars or Nosler CC of the same weight so starting 1gr below the powder manufacturers data for a different bullet of the same weight is often done.

Running the load over a chronograph is the easiest way to get an indication of how a combination of powder & bullet is performing. I use Lovex S062 in both my 6.5 Creedmoor and 260 Rem, Lovex don't list load data for either cartridge but the powder used to be sold as Accurate AA4064, using their load data and help from Laurie Holland I started at 35gr (1gr under the minimum load) and compared velocities, I ended up with a load at 37gr which works very nicely with a mid-range velocity of 2600fps.

Yes still within SAAMI spec all though the bullet is seated a bit low for my liking. I stripped them all and they are ready to be re loaded. I will re build them. All being well next shoot I will put them over the chronograph.

I have re loaded them all using the current load data obtained off the web site. The only difference is my cartridge over all lengths are a lot shorter than recommended. But they do chamber and extract. I am now waiting for a range day. All though I have to say not with the usual degree of excitement. But I have invested in a new pair of safety glasses for the occasion.
After that it will probably be consigned to the cabinet.
I am more interested in finding some proper rifles like a P14 and for some reason a Nagant long rifle.
I am of the opinion that you can keep your modern go faster pap.
