Never a real fan of the SMLE MK III - always liked the No 4 better.

Of course that could be because I grew up in Canada where you hardly ever saw a Mk III - but everybody had a No 4. They used to sell them at Canadian Tire stores for $40. Mk IIIs were far less common.

I think the Mk 111 looks much better personally,but its just a matter of preference. I would never have considered a Mk 4.

Glad I'm not the only one.

I do love SMLE's, just not to shoot with. I just can't seem to get on with actually shooting them......I find the No.4 and No.5 much more to my liking, hence why I have a 4 and 5.

Well, not officially I believe. They changed the official nomenclature to remove the reference to Short Magazine Lee Enfield on or about the date the No 4 was introduced into service.

The SMLE refers to the No 1 rifle, it was its original name however in 1926 the Enfield nomenclature was changed to a numerical sequence with the SMLE becoming the rifle No1.

This was in place before the No4s adoption so the No 4 was never an SMLE.

The rifle No3 was developed before the change and was know as the Pattern 14 up till then.

The rifle No 2 was a SMLE converted for .22rf ammunition and was called the .22-in R.F. Pattern 1914 Short Rifle. Not to be confused with the Pattern 14 No3 rifle which was the Mauser Enfield made in the USA in 303 and the Model 17 made in 30-06 for the US Army.

Hope this clears it all up for you, the No4 is not an SMLE.
