Re: Best 600 mard 308 bullet
Time to update this post with our recent findings, oomans. We'll whisper the results quietly because we know the porrij monster will be along soon to trumpet "WE TOLD YOU SO!" and we don't want to steal his thunder.
The 240 gn NOE cast bullets we obtained from dodgyrog did rather well. We worked up two loads for them, one subsonic using Trailboss and we shot those at 25 and 100 mards. The groups were more than up to our needs, the 100 mard group typically being about 2 to 2.5 inches. We thinks that not bad for our first go and we suspects it can be improved upon.
The second load was using a pokier, supersonic, loading, the aforementioned Alliant in what Dromia considered to be a bucketful, and we shot that at 300 mards. We don't have an actual group size for this because we were firing it against a target marked and patched after every shot, but we were getting a very pleasing number of 5's and occasional V bulls with it. Worst was one out in the 3, but we'd like to think that was down to us getting the wind wrong as it was over at 9 o'clock.
Our summary: 'efty cast bullets are certainly good for subsonic loads at close range and not bad at 300 mards. We admit we have had better performance from factory copper jacketed ammo at 300 mards but this was our first go with paw loads and cast bullets at that, so we have much to learn. We suspect things will get better: Dromia has given us lots of tips and advice about boolit fit and suchlike so our next batch will be better... We're thinking next of doing a comparison by pawloading some 155 or 165 gn Scenars and seeing how they compare will cast at the same range.
