Brattonsound Cases

#1 Post by pbrazendale »

Hi all,

I am currently looking at suitable gun and ammo cases and have heard Brattonsound are a quality maker.

Just some questions I am looking at the RD5 case and PA5 ammo case, would these both suffice for a FAC application? I am also aware they do a security plus range which is more expensive, do I need the additional security or would the standard suffice?

Thanks in advance.

for the guns the standard stuff will do, for ammo you don't actually need as much security (i have a RD5 for my guns and then a couple of B&Q safes for the ammo)

As for brattonsound as a brand I've been a tad unlucky in that both my safes had some sort of defect (issue one of the locks jamming open on one, and a slight issue with the lip on the other) but both of these were rectified with a simple phone call, as the safes were open/unlocked they sent me out a fresh lock to replace the broken one, and when my second safe had some issues catching on the door frame they offered to send out some spacers which did the job nicely.

Overall most of the people I shoot with uses brattonsound safes and it seems out of them I've been the only ones to have any issues with them. yet i still won't hesitate to get another one whenever i next move house and want to upscale the collection.

Brattonsound safes are well made, so you won't have a problem if you decide to go with that brand. Possibly the one thing to remember, though, is that if you are using scoped rifles, then you can usually divide the claimed 4-5-6-8-10 etc capacity by a factor of 2. The vault type safes are the worst offenders in this regard, because the thicker door takes up a lot of internal space - the 'normal' door with two locks usually have more internal space. ;)

No problems in recommending Brattonsound. The RD5 is a Sentinel and has two locks with different keys! The Sentinel PLUS range has a single lock and five pins for security. I prefer the PLUS range myself.

The RL5+ is similar in footprint but an extra 200mm high with an integral box - useful for storing other bits and pieces.

I always say, work out the size you need for your current collection and then go up at least one size! You will buy another rifle/shotgun sooner or later.

When you decide, shop around for price and do not worry about whether it is in stock or not. When the shop orders it, they can have it delivered direct to you - thus removing any delivery charges from the shop or te hassle of collecting yourself.

Check the specs, the PLUS range are always 30-40 mm deeper to allow for the door thickness.

Thanks guys this is really helpful, found a decent safe on B&Q website for £35 that's wall mounted and mechanical so should suffice for ammo storage.

If possible bolt the secondary safe to the wall and the main cabinet. We have a series of cabinets within a secure armoury and I still made sure they were all bolted to each other as well as the wall/floor.

I would also say go for at least one size up, if not two. We use 10/12 gun deep/high cabinets and I doubt any of them have more than 6-7 guns in them.

As above, remember cabinet capacities are given for O/U shotguns which are quite narrow, a 50-60mm scoped rifle or one with a bipod fitted will half the amount you can fit into a cabinet. Always work out how many rifles you think you'll need then at least add a further 50% or if possible double it. Also remember that if you're going to have scoped rifles a deep cabinet is a much better option, depth should be around 35cm.

It's usually cheaper and easier to buy and fit one cabinet with spare capacity than it is to run out of space and have to buy and fit another.

Buffalo River Silver Line are good value safes as well, JR Ramsbottoms often have decent pricing on cabinets.

I have 2 brattons sounds and one Buffalo River Silverline, I have to say I prefer the Buffalo River, better mechanism, carpet lined with shelves in the door etc.

I recently upgraded to buffalo river 10 gun cabinet but only fit 5 scoped rifles and 2 shotguns in it so defiantely go for the biggest safe that you can afford, and or, have space for

Any of the advertised brands of gun safes will be passed by your FEO on his visit as long as it's of sufficient size to accommodate what your asking for and is securely bolted to a Solid wall with rawl bolts
Some FEO's have been known to have a good swing on the cabinet so make sure it's very secure
