I have just bought a mossberg mvp lc in .308 calibre it was delivered to my local rfd my fac is for .308 but because the rifle has 7.62 on the barrel they won't release it till they have checked with firearms dept. Anyone else had this problem? It was advertised as .308, I have ammo as .308/7.62.

Hmm, seeing as, however unwillingly, we're now metricated, they should accept it as 7.62 mm or you can sue 'em under some asinine EU law or other...

Firearms departments are usually very happy to amend to .308/7,62x51 for the weapon and ammunition to be held. Biggest problem is how long it will take if you have to send your FAC back on this particular occasion.

Some RFD's will also notify the transfer as 7,62x51./308 and if you do the same your FAC comes back with the same when next updated, regardless it is always best to check with your FEO.

I think you should contact your licensing department because they've issued your FAC with 7.62 ammo that you don't have the authority to shoot out of one of your own rifles. I suspect they will reissue it whilst you wait, looks like a mistake to me, both should say .308/7.62.

I am not as sage and seasoned (no pun intended) as those that have answered before. I think your RFD is observing a strict definition of the law, and the grant, probably in order not to upset his local FAO, which is of course his livelihood. I have heard of this being an issue before but not of my experience with the RFD's I use and my local FAO they seem to be fairly practical on this matter and, of course, it is this inconsistency which leads to confusion. What I do now if applying for a new slot or variation is to apply for the calibre in both the metric and imperial sizes i.e. I applied for a slot for a 6.5mm and did so as 6.5/.260 which they did without question. It is the case that within 6.5 there are several different clambering options keeping it general allows you buy what becomes available to you should it be marked differently. It seems as though your local FAO isn't unfamiliar with this as they have issued your ammunition grant as both so that indicates a precedent. Hope this is of help.

It is always best to check with Firearms certification first as the interpretation is so different across authorities and changing all the time, there is no consistency tween certfying authorities.

I always ask purchasers to seek clarification in this instance from their certification authorities so as to avoid issues later. Better a quick email than to have to unpick the transfer later.

Contact the FAC team yourself and have the calibre on your certificate changed for 308/7.62×51, it's a common issue but technically your RFD is correct.

I'd ring the FLD, explain the problem and ask if you can come to there location and swap certificates there and then. What you need does not require a 'decision' from above its purely an administrative issue.
