Restocking a Swing mk. 4

I'm more than happy with my Swing as an F/TR rifle, I need to get a lot better at shooting before I can reach the limits of what it can do. But the stock is quite hard to get on with, not sure if someone has had a go at it, it was quite short when I got it.

Is it possible to re-stock a Swing with a modern adjustable stock (apologies if that strikes some as akin to vandalism)?

No problem re-stocking - it's just a regular round-bottom action.

But, don't forget, with FTR you're rested at both ends so adjustment, cheek-pieces and the like are not necessary.

Usually, a TR stock is OK for FTR as long as the underside of the butt will act as a bag-rider - if not Ovenpaa will make you one. (A bag rider that is).

As an aside, what trigger do you have?

I don't know what the trigger is, I do know that I find it very nice to use. It was the one on there when I bought it.

On the replacement stock, I'm looking at the HPS wood ones, they seem to be adjustable and have what seems to be a more suitable grip shape, my hands are not that big, and I think the stock on my rifle was setup for someone with large hands but short arms, to judge by the length of pull.

I'll nip over to Bisley next weekend and have a chat to HPS I think.

I believe there's a weight limit for F/TR if you're planning to compete. Mine has a beech thumbhole stock which is very comfortable but heavy.
The traditional laminate stocks from HPS look OK, but they'll need bedding, which is allegedly very expensive unless you DIY.
Might also be worth trying Fultons for a second hand one.
Great rifles....well worth spending some money on.
Have you converted it to Bellvilles yet?

There is a weight limit, but I've not weighed mine to see if it is less than 18lbs, it is not light, that's for sure. The HPS stock seems to be available with a fitted bedding block for different actions, adds a bit to the price, but I'd not fancy DIY bedding.

I'm lucky as the bolt is not too stiff, so although I've thought about converting to Bellvilles I don't really need to, and I'd miss the Swing "ping"!

Don't get obsessed with 'adjustable' and 'grip' stuff. The FTR rifle is rested both ends - you could sit next to it in a chair and pull the trigger with a stick! Shoot what you've got - if it's a bone fide TR rifle, it will easily make weight.

If you get to enjoy your F Class shooting, you'll want another rifle soon enough anyway. The Savage FTR for example is competitive right out of the box but honestly, your Swing will do the job.

I tend to use my Swing for everything, so sometimes I'm using a bipod that the Shooting Shed made for me, but not resting the back end, and the grip shape makes it hard for me to control the trigger as I would wish. I use it general informal club competitions and that's what I'm trying to get the improvements for.

My intention is to keep it, I can't see my shooting getting to the point where it's holding me back any time soon, my wind reading needs a lot of work. But I don't mind investing in something I intend to keep.

Invest in a back-bag Shugie! Doesn't need to be expensive - a simple 'bean-bag' will suffice. That's all I use. Mine's home-made.
