The humble 22-250 versus a 20,0mm steel plate
We were out yesterday zeroing a 22-250 and .243 at a tad over 100 yards and once everything was as it should be I put a few shots into a 20,0mm thick steel plate with the 250 and this was the result of the plate being struck by a 50 grain projectile with a start muzzle velocity of around 3900fps and an impact of around 1287 ft lbs/1745 Joules of energy and a strike velocity of 3400fps. The plate not only displays evidence of significant penetration it is also bowed at the back where the projectiles have hit.
It reinforces my view it is probably best not to stand in front of one of these things...

That is pretty impressive
It would be interesting to see what it would do if it had a steel core

Looks like a scene out of Terminator.

I did a similar thing with some 6.5x55 I was shocked at the damage it caused. Good fun though.

A timely reminder of the downrange power that most of us take for granted.

That must rate as the understatement of the year!Ovenpaa wrote:It reinforces my view it is probably best not to stand in front of one of these things...

You know, snayperskaya, if you were of an artistic bent, you could group several 7.62x54R impacts close together, paint the metal ejecta in bright colours with a yellow centre, entitle the resulting artwork "Fireflowers" and submit it for the £100,000 Turner Prize. It's got to be in with as good a chance as Tracy whats'ername's unmade bed...

If I chucked a few hundred empty 54r cases and empty PKM belts on the floor and called it "The End" it would be more like "art" than Tracy P#ssedup-whats'ernames unmade bed!!!.meles meles wrote:You know, snayperskaya, if you were of an artistic bent, you could group several 7.62x54R impacts close together, paint the metal ejecta in bright colours with a yellow centre, entitle the resulting artwork "Fireflowers" and submit it for the £100,000 Turner Prize. This would be an interesting conversation piece to have sat in the living room, the piece of armour plate is 6" thick and from a German Tiger 1 and the AP shell is a 17-pdr.Although the shell didn't penetrate fully I don't suppose the spalling would have done the crew much good!.......

Impressive snayperskaya, If you ever get to Bovington tank museum have a look at some of the relics on display with HUGE holes through them.
I have a few more plates on the bench and will have a go at them with some solids when I have a spare hour or so. If nothing else they would look good on a shelf in the workshop.
