New or used?

I can get a very good used 22 250 with rings for 675'or a new one at the much reduce price of 975 without rings. The used one has been bore scoped, apparently hardly fired any ammo.

New price for the rifle is 1700.

Which should I purchase?

Do you really have to ask? If the used one is as good as you say, then it's a no-brainer.

I ask because it is a 22 250 a calibre notorious for short barrel life. I have not bore scoped it only taking the rfds word. If I did bore scope it I would be judging it on google research.

While the new gun is heavily discounted. Instead of an £1100 saving on new I am only saving £300, if I go used. Is a 300 saving worth the risk.

That's a question only you can answer yourself. Is this rifle going to be shot a lot or are you looking to shoot less than 50 rounds per month? If you intend to shoot it a lot and are concerned about barrel life then you should think about buying the £950 one on offer. It might be worth checking out the cost for rebarreling should you ever need to do so and see if it's cost effective.

You do not say which make of rifle, that's what I would consider first, some are alot better than others in how they last. Wife had a CZ .22/250 I shot it the most excellent rifle for the money, when sold it went for more than we bought it for.
Only down side we had to down charge the load for Bisley..

I wouldn't bother with a S/H rifle in .22-250. Barrel life is very subjective. You may get 3000 rounds from a carefully shot barrel which was shot "gently" and hasn't had screaming 50gn loads shoved through it till it glowed cherry red and never cleaned! Or if it has been shot with mostly top end ammo as little as 900 before accuracy is effected. The fact is, despite a dealers word, you, nor him for that matter, truly know.

The velocity of a .22-250 in factory or conservatorily loaded ammo is too fast for military and most private ranges.

Likewise, the SSG 69 was an outstanding rifle "of its day" but there's far better stuff off the shelf. Barrels on the SSG are very difficult to replace, magazines are expensive and some say fragile and even the stocks themselves have been known to have issues around cracking/splitting/breaking.

Unless I had an vacant variation, land over which to shoot it and the rifle was gifted to me, I wouldn't be putting hard earned cash over the counter for an SSG69 in .22-250...

sim g is on the money , mags are rare and fragile , the stocks split (although cured by fitting a lovely McMillan) and the barrels are heat swaged in which makes replacement a PIA although not impossible.

unless very cheap I'd leave it alone personally
