Anyone built a gun room?

#1 Post by Adamdavi3s »

Hi All,

When I had my "interview" for S1, I discussed the potential of building a gun room with my FEO.

At the moment my workbench and reloading station is in the corner of our garage (one outside wall and one very solid internal wall) and I've got permission from the boss to look into boxing off about 2.5m by 2.5m which would be a lovely size for the reloading & cleaning bench and a comfy chair with the rifles on the wall.

I just wondered if anyone had constructed one and if you can offer any advice on build and components, especially the door.

Obviously I'll be discussing with the FEO what requirements they have and I can happily Google, but if really like to hear from anyone who has done it before, how much of a pain / cost etc

We use PAS 24:2012 or 100kg class Insurance rated doors internally however a good fire door would probably suffice, subject to the FEO's nod.

Perfect thank you.
I believe a steel frame is a must, but not sure the whole door need to be steel.
However, I am a belt and braces kind of a guy... If somethings worth doing, it's worth doing right the first time!

Firearms Security Handbook 2005. Download or print...

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Likewise, I've know three people build gun rooms referencing the handbook and all passed.

I certainly don't disagree that following the guidebook is the correct way forward.

I was merely hoping for some real world advice/ comments from someone who'd done it before.

You know, don't bother it's way too much hassle, its too expensive don't bother, it's only a days work of block laying you'll be fine, he was only meant to blow the bloody doors off.. That kind of thing!

Those are all subjective issues.

Things cost what they cost only you can judge if it is worth it or not.

Whether it is worth the effort only you can judge

The building aspect is down to the builder, bought in or done yourself, the handbook gives the minimum specifications to be worked to.

For me it was the biggest single achievement in improving my enjoyment of gun ownership ranking up there with getting a decent and comprehensive set of hollow ground screw drivers, again its value to you can only be judged by you.

When I went ahead with mine I had site meetings with all the parties together the engineer (he made and fitted the door, its steel frame and the bars for the window), the alarm people (dedicated three level monitored alarm system with ceiling trembler), Firearms officer and crime prevention officer. All was thrashed out at these meetings with all parties using copies of the handbook as their reference which smoothed agreement. I installed the 1" steel mesh on the partition wall couple of hours. Me and a friend did the ceiling under the floor half a day as it needed more fitting around existing structures.

The pre meetings all meant that when the work was completed there were no surprises and the armoury was signed off no problem.

The hand book is the key to grief free construction that won't bit you in the arse as not being to spec upon completion.

As to whether its worth the effort and expense only you can judge that for you.

That's brilliant thank you, that's the sort of real world example I was looking for.
i agree with the idea that it can improve the enjoyment of gun ownership, right now mine are a pain to deal with and getting to them is a chore.
Reloading is done in a cold and dusty garage, so I think having the dedicated room will increase the enjoyment tenfold.

I do like the idea of getting everyone in a meeting together, I hadn't considered that, but it would definitely (help to) ensure there are no crossed wires or mixed messages in what is expected
