Sorry - I dont buy that. Its got nothing to do with "earning" it. I have an Army number but I dont feel I have any more right to wear anything than anybody who has not.
I know of ex mil who NEVER earned the sniper smock but wear it anyway. And ex mil who never served in the Falklands but wear a DPM Parka which was only issued to those who did. And ex mil who were not SF but wear SAS smocks.
Are they wearing something they have not earned then ?
You might have a point if it comes to a beret or rank badge but NOT when it comes to some milsurp clothing some geezer wants to wear.
Edit - if the majority of ex forces feel that way - maybe they should start a petition to prohibit the wearing of UK Military uniform - like they have in Ireland.
But the UK Govt has never made it an issue .......... because it really is not. Just like whether my rifle looks like a 10/22 or an AR15. Just like whether I shoot a fig 11 or a bullseye.
