Heh! I can see you have fitted into the forum very nicely

For those of you of a suspicious nature, I have no idea what got me thinking about this, I do tend to think about cold shots which set me thinking about cold shots with unknown rifles and I arrived upon this, I was thinking more along the lines of:

We know the point of aim to point of impact range of a .308 is around x yards, given this it is easy enough to pace out the distance and place a marker then align the bore to the marker and the sight to the same point So now we have a rifle zeroed at a given distance, we know the performance parameters of the bullet so a bit of math scratched in the sand (before the tide comes back in).............

Fair to say I have seen some equally good albeit unrelated answers so far.

Shooting sight might be on to something - there's plenty of foliage etc about make a decoy. They're colour blind anyway.

Nice one ShootingSight - I thought I'd lowered the tone......

Ovenpaa: So you did have a solution in mind. I had thought of finding a way to set about 30 MOA, but couldn't think of a starting point...'lining it up down the bore' - should have thought of that. What about the 'uphill shot' (and that's not a euphemism guys   ) - how does it change the maths if you're shootin upward (or downward)?

btw: did anyone check the youtube vid of the eagle...quite impressive :!:

Yes shooting up and down hill makes a difference and the correction is the same for an angle regardless of if it is up/down but I can never remember which way it is (The Viking will know)

Just watched the eagle clip, when I was in northern Spain there were some large birds, vultures maybe that apparently used to drive animals off the edge of cliffs and then fly down for the bits, they were also known to try and do the same to humans.

I would imagine that the steeper the angle up, the more gravity would slow the bullet, and speed it up when shooting down....some purpose software might be better then a 'stick in the sand'...

Was just reading the other topic about your FC shoot - some of the talk about the ammo is 'double dutch' to me :? But I'm glad you all had a good shoot (and a good read) :)

"The hoary old question of where to aim when shooting up or down hill regularly rears its head. It seems that many hunters understand that shooting at a steep angle changes the point of impact, but can't remember why or in which direction.

The correct answer is to hold lower than normal when shooting steeply up or down hill at long range. (At gentle angles you can ignore the problem altogether over the maximum point blank ranges of hunting rifle cartridges.)"
