thinking of trying a new powder
Hi I reload for my 6.5 with 1 in 8 twist with rl15 but have been told I should try n140 or varget.is there any real gains or losses.if so what.thanks
Re: thinking of trying a new powder
I would go for N160 in the 6.5 rather than N140. N140 is Ok for .308 and .303.

Re: thinking of trying a new powder
Is this 6.5 Swedish and what weight bullet?
N140 sounds too fast to me.

Re: thinking of trying a new powder
There are always a few powders that will work with any given cartridge and shooters will have their own favorite. Hopefully, you have a reloading manual - the Sierra one for example will list several different powders for your chosen cartridge.
Usually, we are attempting to maximise on ballistics so we are looking for a powder which gives good velocity and accuracy. Often, this will be a powder that nicely fills the case.
The 'gains or losses' are down to your individual rifle, choice of bullet and primer, in addition to powder - and of course your expectations. Gains and losses can only be verified by testing.

From a price point see if you can get your hands on Reloder17 or Reload Swiss RS60. I've used the latter powder with good success, which is quite similar to Reloder17. My powder supplier buys it in bulk and distributes it in smaller container, £60 per kilo which is very nice!nearly there wrote:It's 6.5X47 with 123 grain heads.I can get a few tubs of varget which will last me a good while.thanks
Sorry I missed your original post. Powders like N140 will work but won't get you what you need. You'll struggle with getting top velocity and probably won't get a good extreme spread either. You can step up to N550 which is a double bass powder and will give you the velocity you need, however it is more energetic and will degrade barrel life some. Laurie made a very informative post regarding this on here within the past 6 months so I'd highly recommend you to use the search facility and look for it here

Re: thinking of trying a new powder
I shoot the 6,5X47 with 123 Scenars which are run through a pointing die and I use Varget exclusively with them and CCI magnum primers. It gets the job done rather wellnearly there wrote:It's 6.5X47 with 123 grain heads.I can get a few tubs of varget which will last me a good while.thanks
