P14 Modification

#1 Post by hitchphil »

Club has an old P14 Target Rifle in 7.62. The Barrel is a tad worn so it shoots 2 moa at best about the same as a good No4. Its in a deep wood TR stock similar in shape under the action to the original P14 stock & has the mag riser / spring. So am thinking get the mag working so it can be used as a basic Service Rifle club trainer, then we scrap the barrel when it really is smooth bore. It can be used for guests basic first visit training & SR groups 5 & snaps at 200-300yds.

The TR rear sight comes out of its elevation block easily, a traditional battle sight fits down in between the ears on the axix pin & a blade foresight fits in the front. We did this with a No4 TR it worked well became dual purpose club gun. Much more useful to the club.

So Question will 7.62x51 feed off that mag riser?

& has anybody got, or know where I can get? a P14/17 mag box, even a floor plate & trigger guard?

Hi,
I don't think 7.62mm will feed off the p14 riser properly, the one on the 14 was designed for 303. I have a P17 target conversion in 7.62, originally made for 30-06 which is closer to the Nato size round and its still a PITA.

You can get a depressor plate that fits over the mag follower, it only works as a single shot loading platform but is fab at aligning the round to the chamber, unlike the original (now) mismatched follower.

Probably no help and i'm rambling :-)

Hehe, which makes you a perfect FB member - that ability to ramble is good and ideally be able to subtly move the thread to a completely different subject is a bonus. :good:

Can you show me on here where that has been done with subtlety?

There is a Facebook page, that may be able to offer some help - "Pattern 1914 and the U.S. Model of 1917 rifles" - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1492029097773652/ just a thought!?
