Proposed changes to gun laws within EU?

#81 Post by Stealthie »

Hi folks,

I just signed up here last night after stumbling across EU proposals for new gun laws and I need some advice with regard to what it might all mean.

I'm afraid that I haven't actually done much shooting for nearly a year due to personal circumstances so I haven't been paying a great deal of attention to anything that's been happening and this all came as a complete surprise to me.

This is the article I read:- http://money.cnn.com/2016/01/05/news/gu ... -new-laws/

As the owner of a pair of Lantac AR15s (one in .223 and one in .22), I'm obviously concerned about several of the listed proposals.

Firstly, I'm assuming that a semi-auto .22lr is certainly under threat as a result of these proposals?
Secondly, although the .223 is straight-pull rather than semi-auto, is it possible that it would fall foul of this legislation as a result of being something "which resemble(s) weapons with automatic mechanisms"?
Thirdly, if they plan to ban military deact's on the grounds that "Under no circumstances will civilians be authorized to own any of the most dangerous firearms (e.g. a Kalashnikov), which is currently possible if they have been deactivated" then, yet again, is it possible that my AR's will be under threat (even if they aren't banned for previous reasons)?
Fourthly, does anybody know what might be meant by "There will also be new limits on the ability to buy gun parts and ammunition online"?
I can't help thinking that legislation such as this could, for example, render it impossible to purchase magazines or service parts and thus render an expensive rifle scrap.
Fifthly, leading on from the above, has anything yet been mentioned about compensation for owners should this all come to pass?

I admit that I haven't been paying a great deal of attention to the firearm community recently but it's not like I've been stuck under a rock and I haven't heard ANYTHING about this at all even though the article I read says it might become EU law by July!

Apologies if this has already been discussed.
If somebody could just point me to the relevant threads I'll go and do my homework, otherwise I'm happy to hear any advice.

Okay, found a couple of the relevant threads and am currently reading through them but perhaps somebody could offer a quick summary of where we're at?

They've had a debate in brussels and... what?

When you've got thousands of people with £1000s in kit that could all be rendered illegal within 16 weeks, it'd be kinda nice if somebody would actually announce WTF is going on.
Even after Dunblane we had a whole year to come to terms with what was going on.

Also, for added misery, does anybody know what extra problems living in Scotland might cause?
I'm sure it'll cause SOME extra problems, what with Hollyrood trying painfully hard to be the most right-on government in the EU, but it'd be nice to know what to expect.

Hi Stealthie,

this link might answer some of your questions, its all proposals at the moment unlike the Deact laws that are coming in which I think are bonkers that we cannot vote them into our law.

I've just dropped on some lovely and very very collectable Bosnian Fleur-de-lis ("Boy Scout") AK mags......allegedly.....which may or may not get eaten by Saddlers mice!.

What surprises me is that most of the people in my shooting circle don't know any thing about the EU thing when I raised the subject they did not know what I was talking about.

That's by no means uncommon - same in my local club. But that's the EU's brand of democracy for you - unless you chance upon it because you actively watch the buggers you'll be the last to know.

If they're not on Social Media how would they know, I wouldn't apart from the emails from BASC.

Surely clubs SHOULD be bringing this to the attention of ALL members, via a newsletter, club nights or whatever.

Typical "leaving to chance" attitude.

Yup.

I'm in my early 50's and one of the younger members of my club :o and I can say that only one other person that was at our club shoot last Sunday had heard anything about this - the rest (none of whom use social media) including the club officials knew nothing about this or the new de-act proposals....and didn't actually believe what I and the other guy were saying!!

I can safely say I am the only person in my Club who uses any kind of social media. Most of them don't know how to use a computer. The average age must be at least 60 years old. I think there are only two members besides me who are not retired and I'm 65 this year.
