Moving air rifle onto FAC

#1 Post by mr smith »

Following from the thread in shotguns about moving a section 2 shotgun onto FAC i'm wondering if anyone has entered an air rifle onto their FAC themselves.

Three OX mainsprings & a couple of squirts of WD40 into the cylinder to promote dieseling.
Will go through a cow lengthways.

The power level and how is sorted, wondering if I can enter it onto my FAC myself. Was told several years back by an FEO that you can't write on your own FAC.

Yep, writing on your own certificate is again, one thing that was in guidance years ago that seems to have fallen by the wayside a long time since. I once had a rifle that I'd imported from Germany land at my home address instead of a receiving dealer and the firearms dept went nuts at the suggestion of me filling in my own ticket. The only time I write on my own FAC, is when I sign it. That's why you don't enter your reloaded ammo on to it.

There are however one or two exceptions. If you are an RFD transferring on to your personal FAC, you can enter that as the firearm was held under one authority (RFD) and then transferred to another authority (FAC) Likewise with transferring a shotgun to a firearm, one authority to another. The police need informing of the transfer within seven days.

Now currently if you hold a s58 obsolete calibre and wish to shoot that as per s1, the guidance is to apply for the variation informing the police of your intention to shoot the said firearm. Your certificate should then be returned to you with that s58 now technically a s1 and you must then secure it accordingly and can acquire ammunition.

In the case of FAC air it's very much the same as with s58. You apply for the variation, if not already held and infirm the police in writing that your make, type and calibre and serial number of air rifle is to be upgraded to s1. Again, once your ticket is returned to you, where the details should have been entered by the police, the work can be carried out by you if you so wish and the air rifle now lives in your cabinet and used according to the conditions on your certificate.

Unfortunately, the civilianising of the police, the generally poor knowledge of firearms depts and the bombastic attitude of some, will see such a relatively easy process ruined by half truths and half wits....
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

One point worth noting

I've been told that moving an airgun onto an FAC is a one way street....once FAC, always FAC - they cannot be down-converted back off FAC & off-licence; so don't do it with one you'd miss if things changed in the future

It's just an old HW80 which apart from looking for a bit more power it'll keep it out of the SNP's grasping hands at least for a while.
