What's the extractor claw look like- has it worn away slightly?Racalman wrote:Yes I have stripped the bolt, cleaned and lubricated as appropriate.
I think the problem is that the case slips out of the extractor claw and pings sideways in the locking area so the ejector spring can't do it's job properly. What I don't understand is why it's started doing it now and why replacing the relevant parts hasn't fixed it.
I've heard from other sources that the ejector spring can be too strong and cause this to happen. As I now have a spare spring I'm going to try making it weaker to see if that helps. I will report back.

Well I've got one and there's no point looking at a new barrel so I might as well use it for somethingsaddler wrote: You need a bore scope to look inside the receiver wall?

Have you changed scopes? We have a few members who have issues with ejected cases hitting target style turrets then dropping back into the receiver.

No, same scope for 15 years. When the problem first arose I fitted a deflector plate but it didn't help. I then took a video of cases being cycled and in slow motion you can see the odd one coming straight back out of the action and dropping vertically down.Landy Dave wrote:Have you changed scopes? I will try weakening the ejector spring by shaving some material off the outside of the coils.

Interested to know if you fixed it too as mine started doing it last time I had it down the range, only fired 175 rnds but was flawless for the first 150.

Re: Rem 700 ejection problem
Sorry for the delay, been on holiday
.
I found an online spring rate calculator which suggested that removing 0.010" from the outside diameter of the spring would reduce its rate by 50%. As I now have a spare spring I had nothing to lose by trying it.
I wound some PTFE plumber's tape onto a 2mm drill bit and screwed the spring onto it. I put the bit in my Dremel and spun it against a sheet of coarse emery until I'd removed the required amount of material.
So far I've only tried it at home with empty cases but I haven't had any failed ejections yet so it looks promising. I will try it on the range in a couple of weeks and let you know how it goes.
The weaker spring ejects the cases about half the previous distance, and some of them spin in an entertaining manner as they fly out.

Re: Rem 700 ejection problem
Results on the range were not as good as I had hoped. When shooting prone it was nice to see the cases pile up within reach instead of landing in the fire trench, but I had two misfeeds in 45 rounds which is not good enough for PR shoots.
I guess a Sako extractor conversion is next
