They are outside of the USA.
They are in the US as well......the Type56 variant is easy to spot in films as the front sight post is fully enclosed like a Dragunov sight whereas AKM variants from just about everywhere else have the "eared" style front sight block.
The Chinese Type56's also have a unique rivet pattern on the front trunnion that no one else uses and the majority of Type56's use the AK-47 style gas tube with four vent holes, whereas the standard AKM pattern rifles have the vent holes located on the gas block itself.

A classic shot of a Type56 in a film is the scene in Full Metal Jacket with the Vietnamese female AK equipped sniper, in one shot there is a view where the front sight arrangement can clearly be seen, see below.....

And before anyone says it.......I know the NVA and Viet-Cong received thousands of Type56's from China so the scene in Full Metal Jacket is historically accurate with regard to its use. :good:

I should point out that FMJ was filmed in the UK. The USA banned importation of Chinese made AKs some time ago.

You can still get Norinco type-56 rifles in Canada, which doubles as a cheap location for the USA in so many popular films and tv.
