Why is off hand called off hand

#1 Post by ovenpaa »

Can anyone tell me why shooting standing unsupported with a rifle is called off hand shooting? I can relate it to pistol when shooting one handed however with a rifle I am not so sure...

Because it (the rifle) sits in your hand when being shot - ie in the 'weak' hand. Anyway that's my guess!

Shot off hand rather than off a rest or off a bipod?

Seems to have been a debate of long standing...

It means shooting whilst standing, unsupported - for example, how you typicaly fire a shotgun when doing practical / tactical..

I suppose "taking one off the hand" is doing it standing up.

Oh... Sorry... We're talking about guns.... Opps... :)
