.

10 or so years ago there was an old 60's decommissioned Russian
diesel electric hunter - attack submarine moored by the millennium dome
on the river Thames and it was a museum attraction.

On a guided tour, in the front torpedo compartment the tour guide asked
us to look closely at the torpedoes, after a few minuets of study it was
pointed out that all the makers plates and instructions were in English.

In the 1960's the Russians had such a good spy network and the plans
for the torpedoes were so detailed that they even included the manufacturing
plates so they were copied also. The torpedo was an identical copy of the
British torpedo of the day.

Maybe all gun manufacturers copy the old Imperial measurement and then
just put their own name on it, or in the case of 1960's Russia, they don't
even bother to put their own name on it. :D
