But, is it still illegal, because the mag is only temporarily limited to 2 shells (with a piece of dowel) to comply with hunting regs (i.e. not gun laws)??

(I really am trying to get my head around these UK Regs, but it's confusing... :o )
yes. totally dumbarse.

i'm not sure on the laws with rifled shotguns, but i think they are just outright ban even on pumps. which is what sec5 is. banned for anyone that isnt police or forces (or some dealers/smiths )

your shotgun, in England, would have to be on a firearms certificate as it has a mag capacity of more than 2 rounds. the wooden dowel is not a suitiable restriction as you can just take it out and have full capacity again. but I guess it meets your rules as you can be stopchecked when hunting by a game and wildlife officer?? and as long as its there then, as you are hunting, its ok. but if its not in, you get done for crimes against geese?

Yes, exactly. The rule is there for a good reason - to stop some jackass going on shooting when the birds are well out of effective range, and wounding birds with no chance of recovering them. I've actually seen that, back in the day, before the 2 round hunting mag limit was put in - made my blood boil. ****

thought so, and makes sense as its only for hunting. our rule is an absolute thing, and you can't switch and change it as you like between tickets without lots of paperwork

well yeah, as you would be able to do an awful lot of damage with a slicked up side by side and a pocket full of shells...
