Can someone tell me what a one for one variation is?

#1 Post by Sixshot6 »

I've heard what one is, does it mean I can see a rifle and then free up a slot to buy another rifle of the same caliber but without applying for a variation. Can someone walk me through this if its possible please?

You send your licence off with a covering letter stating that you want a one for one variation. Doesn't have to be the same calibre, as long as you have a slot to trade. If you sold a gun you'd have to send your certificate off for a one for one variation before you could buy its replacement, even if it's the same calibre.

If you have for example a rifle in 7.62x39 and want to sell it and buy a different rifle in 7.62x39 you would put in for a one-for-one to have the one rifle removed from your certificate and have a permission to aquire (empty slot) for another one.

It also applies if you want to remove a rifle of one calibre and aquire another in a different calibre. As the name implies you change one-for-one rather than apply for a grant to increase the number of firearms held.It is handy if you have a firearm you perhaps don't use much and want to aquire something else.

For example if you have an empty .223 on you FAC and you decide that you want a 7.62x39 then you can apply for a free one for one variation which will remove the 223 from the FAC and replace it with a 7.62x39.

As you are not increasing the number of fire arms on your FAC then it is just a paper excercise, obviously as always you need to give good reason, target shooting.

Best to speak with your firearms licensing people as to how they want you to put in for it, some used to accept a letter but perhaps nowadays you need to complete one of the variation forms, in any case you will need to send in your FAC to be altered.

Unless you know for certain that they will accept a letter, speak with them first, just might save you some time.

Yeh it's not a lot, but if it buys more ammo, then it's no bad thing.
