Bullet puller for .44 Mag

#1 Post by zanes »

Have got a rather large amount (~120 rounds, don't ask) of very suspect 44 Magnum ammo with a 240 grain LSWC (crimped) bullet seated that needs pulling.

Having borrowed a kinetic hammer thingy-bob from a club mate, got nowhere with it and heard another club mate also found them crap on .357 I'm wondering if there's another method to pull the bullets that actually works- a lot of the press based ones mention "don't use on lead bullets". Whether that's because they muller the bullet or can't grip it I don't know.

Bullet saving is not particularly crucial. Primers and powder are duff anyway.

Those bullets must have a REALLY tight crimp. I've pulled all sorts of stuff without much problem. Are you using it on a carpeted floor? Try it on bare concrete - makes a big difference.

A hammer puller is about the only way as it is difficult to grip the bullet on a .44 Mag with a collet puller. As Redcat says, give it a good clout on a concrete surface.

I had to pull a load of 9mm a few years ago and some of them required a frightening amount of force to dislodge. You make be 'holding back' because its someone elses hammer.... As said, hitting them off a hard surface makes all the difference. If you want to stop the hammer being scuffed put a thin piece of card down (like part of a cereal box) or a few sheets of paper. I managed to get away with using an Argos catalogue for most of mine but some needed to be whacked on concrete with just a bit of card.

i use a bit of train track under mine.

but the pullers that sim g i think it was linked to, could be good. failing that if the bullets aren't needed, use actual pliers over the top of the press, like that tool

I clout mine on an ingot of lead - that works well too.

Thanks for the tips- sounds like I've been a bit lily-livered with it. Will have a good whacking session ( ;) ) with it tonight and see whether it works.

After I stopped being Southern with it I had a very satisfying whacking session and have now dismantled said rounds and given the tomatoes a feed.
