There are 138,728 section 1 firearms certificate holders and 574,946 shotgun certificate holders in England and Wales...........34 relevant laws which govern the control of firearms................legal firearms were used in at least 10% of firearms homicides in 2008/09

We advocate a change in the law to create a single system for the licensing of section 1 firearms and shotguns. Such a system should be based upon the current process for granting licences for section 1 firearms

Well, it's too late to get anything passed about gunlaws relating to this tragic incident...last day was Monday...to get it in before summer recess.

It'll be October before anything can be approved by the commons.

Far too much on their plate to worry about firearms legislation at the minute. Changes are coming of that there is no doubt, but if those changes mean further restrictions, is another matter.

The longer it takes the better imo, the general public are a fickle lot and probably had completely forgotten about the whole thing after a month or two, if there's no public support they're less likely to be able to get anything too ridiculous passed.

It'll be interesting to see how the first anniversary will pass - only a week on Thursday! Time definitely speeds up the older you get :?

I think you're right. As well as they'll take the opportunity to restrict further certain categories of firearms when they bring the various Acts and Ammendments into a new, all encompassing Act....

Well that was clear as mud.GP's dont want to get involved in firearms applications so what i wonder are they going to do next? The present system works perfectly alright so why waste time and money.Yes i know we've had 3 shooting incidents in the last 3 decades,but you cannot forsee in advance when someone is going to flip.

If one's GP is to be asked to support (or otherwise) an appliaction/renewal, then this may lead to people not seeking treatment for bad nerves/alcoholism which of course will have the opposite outcome to what is intended.

I don't think Cumbria will go away unnoticed...I reckon Miliband et al will drag it up for political reasons. And Clegg may be forced to take the lib/dem line...what ever that is...tree hugging?

On what basis can the Government slip in a banning on certain guns? Bird used a shotgun/22lr rifle...staple tools of farmers???

On what basis can the Government slip in a banning on certain guns?

It didn't stop them in 1988, Rob, after Hungerford. The government seized the opportunity then and I think they'll seize it again. Perhaps not as far as banning, but certainly in reclassifying certain types of gun.
