Krag Jørgensen carbine

#1 Post by JD4570 »

Lovers of classic rifles may enjoy a look at the latest entry on our Facebook page.

I've been restoring a 116 year-old Krag Jørgensen carbine

All I need now is to find some brass and I can start developing loads!

Presume you are conversant with this escapade, with the same action & its status / potential defects?

Hi HitchPhil,

Thanks for your post and glad you like the final result.

I hadn't come across the above accident report from last year, so thank you for adding that. it makes for an arse-nipping read, especially as I've become intimately familiar with the layout of the Krag over the past couple of weeks. I will be mindful of what you've shown me as I get to work loading for mine. The one I've got is an American Springfield Krag carbine and from its serial number, was one of 5000 produced in 1899. The calibre is definitely 30-40 Krag and the bore, although in generally good order, has a pattern of wear consistent with the weapon's age so I don't think it was every changed out.

All of that said though, I think I might just take another read of that report before starting work. They were lucky someone wasn't killed from the look of it.

We have a Noggin Krag in 6.6x55 and it's pretty awesome. There are a few design difference between it and the US Krag, the Noggin was intended for a more powerful round and so has a better bolt lock up arrangement.

Unfortunately that NRA report seems seriously flawed so the "conclusions" have to be viewed as doubtful.

What is clear is that sloppy handloading isn't a good idea and access to information doesn't guarantee knowledge.

I know a little about the Krag blow up and poor reloading is the prime suspect but with all the 'Legal / Insurance' liabilities around these days reports have to be written in a certain 'way'
