Variation medical report

Yeah...what offence and what medical conditions should be mentioned, apart from "madness" :-)

i take it its the grey area of having a firearm in your possession while not actually having a license as its away for variation ???

as for medical conditions they quote mental health epilepsy stroke stress related illness depression alcoholism substance use or dependency heart disease cancer followed by the quote 'this list is not definitive'

Cancer affects people in different ways. If you are one of the high percentage of people that become clinically depressed because of the diagnosis, during treatment or in the lull of activity post treatment then they will possibly not consider you to be in a state of mind to possess a firearm.

My wife was diagnosed in 2013 and we both spent a year in the hands of the NHS. My shooting was the only time I got away from Cancer central. It kept me sane. However there are people who couldn't deal with the stresses of the situation and might consider their firearms for suicide or suicide pact.

I did have a long chat (seemed more like a psychological profile) with a cancer nurse at the hospital where i was advised to take control of my life and not let the disease run my life ,positive thinking etc etc ,we discussed hobbies and i mentioned shooting which resulted in some furious scribbling on her form .Later on i went back to the questioned and explained that if i couldn't shoot then two hobbies would be taken away ie clay and target shooting and two lots of mates would be taken away hence cancer would be controlling my life .

Might it just have been a conincidence that they kicked off with this when you put the variation in? Otherwise this just smacks of an FEO/FLD making it up as they go along

OK i can understand (but don't agree with) them doing this on a grant or renewal, but why at variation? You're either safe to be trusted with all of your firearms or you're not, why does this extra gun make a difference?

Either way my first step would be contacting BASC (or any organisation you're a member of) and following their advice. If you're not a member of such an organisation a polite letter explaining that they have your GP's details and your permission to contact them if they have any concerns regarding your medical condition.

From what I remember of BASC advice, if the police want medical information after a certificate has been granted the onus is on them to pay for it. If it's before the grant it's for you to pay.
