It is - I figured it would be an easier calibre to get a good range of off the shelf ammo for.

It is indeed

they are produced in .308, 7.62x54r (the "proper" calibre), 30.06 and 9.3x64 Brenneke. The latter two calibres are by special order only.

9.3x64 Brenneke, now that's something I wouldn't mind having a go at. I take it that's intended to be a anti-materal round?

I can't help wondering if that is more realistically the 9,3x62mm round as 9.3x64mm is an altogether more powerful cartridge which I wouldn't expect to see in a semi-auto rifle, especially one from Putinastan.

There again stranger things have been known to happen.

Definitely the 9.3x64 Brenneke. The military designation for a Dragunov in this calibre is the SVDK, the bolt and breech etc is specific to this calibre but the standard Svd milled steel receiver is more than up to it.Pre-1992 Dragunovs had internal and external "lightening" cuts on the receiver, the external ones being a machined oblong section on each side of the receiver and the external ones were omitted on post 92 variants in order to increase the receiver strength in order to handle more powerful calibres. In 2009 the Russians developed the semi-armour piercing 9SN round for the SVDK, which will penetrate most body armour out to around 600m.

More than a vested interest in 7.62x54r!
