An all rounder rifle for ALQ

#1 Post by ovenpaa »

If you had to choose just one rifle and cartridge as an all rounder for everything from Rabbits through Fox to Muntjac what would it be and why?

So its got to do all three. I'm trying to think of a cartridge that could that legally. I know Muntjac can be shot with 222 now. But you want something that doesn't destroy the meat on a rabbit. Is this working within the law or an imagined perfect scenario?

.223.

A well developed subsonic cast load for rabbits (much like a .22lr round) something a little heavier for foxes. Then a heavy bullet for Muntjac...

That is perfect answer, and it stays in the law too.

If it only includes Mutjac/CWD then the .223-plenty of potential with different ammo. If there is to be the chance at Roe and anything bigger then it would be the 6.5x55 - Mine is often used on Fox (with NV) and also makes a suitable round for longer range rabbits and corvids.

You can push the lighter rounds fast and the 142s will grass even the biggest red.

If I were to go any larger, i.e. Roe and upwards it would be .308/7.62x51mm, but of course Roe can be legally killed with .223/5.56x45mm here in darkest Jockistan.

Bit of over kill on rabbits though green55 which is why I suggested the swede teanews - my go to stalking rifle is in fact a .308 :good:
