The lesser of two evils I have seen barrels ruined by the very method you describe having the wood irretrievably jammed.

I use steel rods, with appropriate care, and have never had a problem.

Too each his own, but I cannot recommend wood.

I think using Oak makes a difference over normal dowelling. I was tempted to use lengths of brass rod until I read a horror story about someone who managed to get then jammed but my view is that is just down to being ham fisted, if the slug is obviously tight then stop immediately and reverse it a suitable rod.

Douglas, what did it measure as in the end?

measured 311, i have been told in the past that most nagants would be this as opposed to 308, dont know if this was like a story that grew and grew???

.311 is correct for a Nagant.

Out of interest my 91/30 slugs out at .314 groove, .305 bore. Like the .303 they vary in groove size.
