I keep hearing that modern AR's are more friendly with their brass deflectors? I only ask as in the uk we might be getting a rifle that is close to a semi auto center-fire soon and I'd like to know please.
Having shot M16/M4s left handed, semi, auto and burst, I can tell you they are very leftie friendly. I do wear shooting glasses or some other eye protection though, just in case.
Thanks, I only asked as I don' t think Lantac with whatever system they are developing to rival cca and sgc will come with a stag arms esq left side ejection port as an option. To be fair Jeff from gunblast who is a lefty shoots ar's and other rifles no problem that you think he would have with.

I shot prone small bore in high school with a Winchester 52D bolt action right hand rifle from the left shoulder. It used to give the coach fits seeing my rifle butt dropping down and leaning to the left so I could work the bolt with my left paw. Still managed to shoot pretty well if I do say so myself.

The A2 and variants with the built in case deflector are fine for lefties like me. The 'slick side' ARs and M16s will put brass in your face and down your shirt collar if you shoot from the left side. Don't know about a manually operated AR but a semi will. I owned two ARs and fired many an M16A1 in the service. A1 rifles for left handed shooters on the range were equipped with a flimsy snap on case deflector that quickly fell to pieces in any real use.

Well if its close in terms of operation to semi, its gonna be needed that brass deflector. I have a vz58 that is nearly semi (you might have heard of the mars action), but I'm interested if this one is relatively affordable and is interesting. Plus the ability to mount optics better is a plus.

Given the choice I would opt for a standard right handed receiver over a Stag leftie for anything other than blowback operation.
If I get a 'click' instead of a 'BANG' all I have to do is look down to see what the problem is and even as the round is loaded I can visually check it has fully gone in to battery, right handers have to break position to look and might not even see a mis-feed before the trigger is pulled.

The blowback action of the 9mm lever release and the 9mm autos I've shot have tended to ruin my shooting glasses with the amount of hot stuff that comes back at me, and the experience isn't a pleasant one. The piston operated rifle was better.

All these have had case deflectors of some sort so I cannot say if one without will be a problem. If you have the self-unloading system or semi auto then having a side charging upper isn't a requirement, and I wouldn't choose an upper without a deflector or dust cover.

Good deals with Paul101, Charlotte the flyer, majordisorder, Charlie Muggins, among others. Thanks everybody.

Afternoon peeps,

I'm right handed but blind in my right eye.
I shoot underlever and rimfire from right shoulder ( I can shoot from left if needs be..)
308 and AR from left shoulder.
Shotgun from left but have been known to panic when a pigeon has flown past the hide and shoulder the on the right...
I can also shoot the enfield that I had from the right shoulder with my cheek across the stock ( left eye behind the sight ). If I did it right (correctly) then it was ok, if not, it hurt somewhat !!

Probably why I'll never be an Olympic shot !
