Small hands and short fingers

#1 Post by Dangermouse »

I have a friend who is interested in coming shooting with me and for whom I may be prepared to buy a rifle for if they show enough interest.
I have noticed that they have what I consider to be small hands. Initially I was thinking of a 10/22 in A Boyds stock but have started to wonder if it may be too much of a reach for them. It would be possible to take some wood from the thumb side of the stock but that will make it harder to sell down the line.
I then thought about an AR type with a pistol grip that you can change the thickness of the grip. Still haven't ruled that out if they like military type rifles. With an variable position stock that could work well as we could both shoot it.

Any thoughts or experiences?

There are lots of people of small stature with very small hands who shoot TR with the standard stocks who seem to have no problem. Most of the so called problems of small hands/stature are imaginary, mostly by those with large hands who just think that the smaller stature person won't be able to cope.

I'll go stand in the corner!

Seriously though thanks, I was wondering if a traditional style stock would be ok,

I was always advised to marry a lady with small hands, for some reason?

Speaking as one of the aforementioned dimensionallly challenged shooters I have trouble getting both a corrct grip and correct finger position with most standard rifle stocks. My trigger finger usually ends up on the side of the trigger. Not ideal. :bad:
I've tried a few different 10-22 stocks like Boyds etc with the same problem. My Colt M4-22 is the first rifle I've ever had which has a grip which is actually too small for me.
Having said that many disciplines don't require a good grip, just good trigger control so the strong hand can be positioned wherever is comfortable and repeatable usually for me that means off to the side of the stock.
I have to say I am loving the dimensions of my Colt. It's the first rifle I've ever had which feels like it isn't too big for me. If I'd realised the AR-15 was so small I'd have had one years ago.

My missus finds my Sig 522 a perfect fit - luckily she doesn't have her ticket so can't pinch it off me...

Depending on the discipline your friend will be shooting, look also for how easy they can operate the safety catch. I can't even reach the catch on my Sig without coming off-grip (although it's ambi so I just use the other side).

Junior models of many rifles are available - anything .22 originating from the U.S. will often be bought for juniors so the manufacturers make the dimensions err on the side of the small.

You could try them on the Umarex MP5, the grip/distance to the trigger is tiny! I have average size hands and the 2nd pad of my index finger sits on the trigger if i hold it normally!

Plenty of adjustable pistol grips out there though and ways of getting them on rifles like a 10/22
