We know it will get to 1,000 yards, but will it be accurate at that range, and can it knock the skin off a rice pudding on arrival ?

A 77gn SMK doing 2900fps at the muzzle, is still super sonic at 1000. With a 300yd zero, you'll have about a 377 inch drop.

A .308 driving a 155gn SMK at 2800fps at the muzzle will only be doing 100 fps more at 1000yds than the .223, around 1200fps, eith a 320 inch drop.
Hate to burst your bubble but according to ballistic AE using the proper G7 BC the 77 goes sub sonic well before 1000yds even when launched @2900

Danny, as mentioned, the figures were representative to the potential of the cartridge, with BCs drawn from manufacturers websites and an boing app....

So in order to maintain "my bubble", do you agree or disagree that as per my original point, that with the right bullet and barrel combination, the .223 Remington can be a 1000 yard cartridge?
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Sim absolutely the 223 can be a 1000 cartridge but in order to achieve this it needs to be a highly specialised tool.

I must apologise I hadn't read the whole thread when I posted my last post.

I love the 223 it's a great and versatile cartridge.

As you've seen, for a number of reasons it would be a very good choice.

CZ527 Varmint, Kevlar stock, 1 in 9", set trigger a really good rifle.
